The ship now known as the SS Seiklon Axel began its career as the USS Costner in the Federation Merchant Fleet
. It served in the Delta Quadrant as a Multi-Purpose Support Vessel (MPSV) for nearly 30 years. It was transferred to the ownership of the Captain Paul Gorgon in 2415 by private sale rather than being decommissioned.
This ship is 74.4m long x 21.5m high x 31m wide and is comprised of 6 decks. (Dimensions Subject To Change)
It’s design gives it the ability to carry out a number of mission profiles including:
Deep Space Survey
Captain Gorgon selected this vessel to replace the original Seiklon Axel due to its salvage capabilities and durability.
The Bison Class SS Seiklon Axel (NGL-5615) has very robust engines and strong tractor beam emitters giving it a high towing capacity at impulse speeds (low warp speeds with warp field enhancers in place). The true genius of the class is the ability to allow access to the main cargo hold by workbee utility vehicles carrying cargo. This is achieved through pressurization and purge systems within the forward airlocks. (Seen just above the main deflector)
It’s strong shields and ablative armor make it a tough nut to crack by most vessels not specifically designated as a warship.
One area where the Seiklon Axel is light is in its weapons capabilities. Though it has two separate but complimentary systems, they are not on par with many ships cruising deep space.
First is the forward mounted Type VII Chain Array made up of six individual emitters. This package has a 45* field of fire across the bow of the vessel and provides a steady beam duration at the highest power levels possible for the Class VII phaser. It does this by allowing emitters to cool after firing, while the next emitter takes the energy load. (Seen below the main deflector)
The second system is made up of 2 Type V Pulse Phaser Cannons which are housed within the ventral surface of the ship. When needed, they can be lowered through the hull on turrets. Together they provide a nearly 360* field of fire. They are the primary defensive weapons for this class. One downside to the pulse phaser is the need to recondition the weapons after firing to maintain peak performance. This is why they have been designed to be serviced from within the vessel.
This class has no torpedo or proble launchers of any kind.
The cargo capacity of the Seiklon Axel is modest thanks to its Multi Purpose design. Most of its cargo functions are limited to Decks 4 & 5, but the inclusion of cargo airlocks (deck 4) make it unique in its abilities to transfer large amounts of cargo while in space through the use of workbee cargo trains. When landed, the rear door of the cargo hold (deck 5) gives full access to unload vehicles that may be utilized to remove cargo on the ground. The Axel employs 3 landing feet to achieve a stable landing. The first is located between the forward airlocks, the second two are just forward of the pulse phaser doors.
Internally the Bison Class has many attributes that make it indicate its status as a Multi Purpose Support Vessel. It contains a science lab, an overly large medical bay, well appointed guest quarters, and some undesignated space for future upgrades.
